Electrocardiograms (ECGs or EKGs)

Home » Services » Outpatient Services » Electrocardiograms (ECGs or EKGs)

An electrocardiogram, commonly referred to as ECG or EKG, is a fundamental diagnostic tool in electrophysiology. This non-invasive procedure measures the electrical signals that regulate your heart’s activity.

How Does an ECG Work?

To conduct an ECG, electrodes are strategically placed on your skin, typically on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes do not emit any electrical current; instead, they function as sensitive sensors that detect the electrical impulses generated by your heart. These impulses are then recorded and displayed as a series of waves on a monitor or printed on paper, allowing doctors to analyze your heart’s electrical activity.

What Can an ECG Detect?

An ECG can provide valuable insights into various aspects of your heart’s health, including:

  • Heart Rate: Measuring how fast or slow your heart is beating.
  • Heart Rhythm: Detecting irregularities in the heart’s rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmias.
  • Heart Structure: Indicating issues with the heart’s chambers and muscle thickness.
  • Previous Heart Attacks: Identifying evidence of past myocardial infarctions.
  • Electrolyte Imbalances: Detecting abnormalities in blood minerals like potassium and calcium.
  • Medication Effects: Monitoring how certain drugs affect your heart.

Advanced ECG Technology at Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists

At Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists, we utilize 12-lead ECGs, which provide a comprehensive view of the heart’s electrical activity from multiple angles. This advanced technology allows us to collect detailed information about the electrical currents in and around your heart, leading to more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans.

The ECG Procedure

The ECG procedure is quick, painless, and straightforward:

  • Preparation: You will be asked to lie down, and areas where electrodes will be attached might be cleaned and, if necessary, shaved to ensure good contact.
  • Electrode Placement: A technician will place several small, sticky electrodes on your chest, arms, and legs.
  • Recording: The electrodes are connected to the ECG machine via wires. As the machine records your heart’s electrical activity, you will be asked to remain still and breathe normally.
  • Completion: The test typically takes a few minutes. Once completed, the electrodes are removed, and you can resume your normal activities immediately.

Interpreting the Results

The recorded ECG waves provide a wealth of information. Our cardiologists analyze these wave patterns to identify any abnormalities. If any issues are detected, further diagnostic tests or treatments may be recommended to address the findings.
